Les Swenkas (ou Swenkers) sont des travailleurs zoulous qui participent à des compétitions d’un genre particulier. Ils s’affrontent en fin de semaine, dans des concours d’élégance où ils défilent tour à tour dans une chorégraphie silencieuse et toute personnelle, où chacun affiche son style, sa gestuelle particulière et son sens de la pose. Ils sont jugé sur leur tenue (costumes de grandes marques, avec parfois l’étiquette cousue sur la manche ou costumes taillés sur mesure) et sur l’attrait de leur présentation.
The Swenkas (or Swenkers) are Zulu workers who take part in competitions of a special kind. They meet on weekends, in elegance competitions where they file one after the other in a silent and very personal choreography, where everyone shows off their style, gestics and sense of pose. They are judged according to their outfit (name-brand suits, sometime with the label sewn on the sleeve, or custom suits) and to the appeal of their presentation.
